Edition No. 26

Miwa Yanagi Midnight Awakening Dream (Fabric Edition), 2003

In a twelve-meter wide panorama, the Japanese artist Miwa Yanagi positions in Midnight Awakening Dream her Elevator Girls in a labyrinthine shopping gallery at the end of which young women in uniforms may be seen on a floor strewn with piled-up designer clothing.

Fashion and its social codes, particularly in Japanese culture, represent a theme which is central to the work of Miwa Yanagi. As a young artist, she herself offered instruction in textile design for a time in Kyoto.

As an edition for her exhibition in the Deutsche Guggenheim, Miwa Yanagi is allowing Midnight Awakening Dream to be printed upon a stretch of fabric measuring 600 meters in length. The digital print upon sheer Georgette manifests the same precision as do the digital photographic works of the artist. The limited edition is being sold meter by meter in the MuseumsShop and thereby oscillates between fashion and artwork.

Digital print on Georgette (100% polyester).
