Deutsche Guggenheim's exhibition series curated by Deutsche Bank continues with works of art by Günther Förg. In the two preceding years, works from Katharina Sieverdina and Georg Baselitz from the Deutsche Bank Collection were to be seen as part of this series.
Born in 1952 in Füssen, Germany, Günther Förg, who now lives in Colombier, Switzerland, and Munich, Germany, is one of the most important contemporary German artists. His goal of turning color, surface and space into ever new varieties of the expressively experiencable is a continuous line running through his work in all types of media: From murals and paintings through chalk drawings and water colors to photographs and prints.
Since the middle of last year, the show with Günther Förg's works from the Deutsche Bank Collection has been on exhibition at European bank branches, selected art associations and museums. Every fortnight, the art journeys to a new location. Every May, as it has now become tradition, the exhibition space Unter die Linden opens its doors for this show. This time there is also an anniversary to be celebrated: Deutsche Bank's exhibition series is going to be 20 years old. Unveiled for the first time in 1980 under the title "Artist of the Annual Report", the series presents an new artist each year. The series began in 1980 with Friedrich Meckseper and continues next year with the painter Neo Rauch from Leipzip.
For the stop in Berlin - the highlight of the exhibition tour - a special concept has been designed in cooperation with Günther Förg especially for the exhibition space. Five new, monumental paintings by Günther Förg will be presented. The nearly 10-meters-in-size paintings in acrylic were created in the last few months and will be seen for the first time in public at the Deutsche Guggenheim. The canvasses will be accompanied by a selection of works on paper from the Deutsche Bank Collection, which includes 462 paintings, drawings, photographs and prints by the artist.

For Deutsche Guggenheim Edition No. 11: Günther Förg has created a sculptured cloverleaf inspired by turn-of-the-century Scandinavian ceramic art, especially by the ornamental work of the Danish architect and artisan Thorvald Bindesbøll (1846-1908). During the exhibition in Berlin, it is installed as a large sculptural piece which disbands again into its individual elements: Cloverleaves available in seven colors. Issued in a limited edition of 250 specimens, it can be purchased at a price of DM 180,-- each.
What is more, as an indication of Förg's involvement with the Berlin exhibition space, there is a one-of-a-kind "reference": From his own private collection, Günther Förg is showing - right at the beginning of his exhibition - a piece of work by the artist Lawrence Weiner, to whom the next exhibition in the Deutsche Guggenheim is dedicated.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue, which presents a selection of Günther Förg's works in the Deutsche Bank Collection along with texts from Deutsche Bank Collection Curator Dr. Ariane Grigoteit and art critics Dr. Max Wechsler and Rudolf Schmitz. The paperback catalogue is available - upon request with an English insert - at a price of DM 15.
The extensive accompanying program includes not only daily guided tours, lunch lectures and a family brunch but also a special event with Günther Förg: On June 1 at 6 p.m., the artist and Rudolf Schmitz, art critic from Frankfurt, will lead a discussion event in the exhibition space.
As with all the exhibitions from the Deutsche Bank Collection in Deutsche Guggenheim, admission is free.
